Nursing staff working in psychiatric settings are at the frontline of patient care, and their role requires significant emotional and psychological resilience. Caring for psychiatric patients, particularly those with severe and chronic conditions, can be emotionally taxing. Nurses working in psychiatric units are exposed to patients’ mental health struggles, including aggressive behaviors, emotional distress, and the challenges of managing complex psychiatric symptoms. Research has shown that the psychological burden of caring for psychiatric patients can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and decreased job satisfaction among healthcare providers (Hernandez et al., 2023).
In Nigeria, psychiatric nursing is an essential part of the healthcare system, with nurses playing a pivotal role in managing and supporting patients with mental health disorders. However, the psychological burden of caring for psychiatric patients remains an understudied area within the Nigerian healthcare system. Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State, is one of the major hospitals providing psychiatric care in the region, yet the specific psychological challenges faced by nurses in this context remain unclear. This study aims to examine the psychological burden experienced by psychiatric nurses at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State.
Nurses working in psychiatric hospitals face unique psychological challenges, including emotional exhaustion and stress, which may affect their well-being and job performance. Despite the crucial role that psychiatric nurses play in patient care, little attention has been given to understanding the impact of these burdens on their mental health. The Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State provides psychiatric care to a large number of patients, yet there is no in-depth study focusing on the psychological burden faced by the nursing staff. This study will investigate the psychological burden of caring for psychiatric patients among nurses at the hospital and assess its impact on their mental health and job performance.
The study will focus on psychiatric nurses at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State, and will assess their psychological burden while caring for psychiatric patients. Limitations include the potential for response bias, as nurses may underreport emotional distress due to social desirability. The study’s findings may also be limited by the hospital’s specific resources and patient population, making it challenging to generalize to other healthcare settings.
